Elsa Bellini is a character mentioned in the episode Send in the Clowns of the ITV crime drama Midsomer Murders.
Elsa was the twin sister of Daniella Bellini; original last name Sorefski, and both used to be the star performers of Ferabbee's Circus. Alongside performing in Swynton Magna, they would occasionally do worldwide tours in countries like Germany, though that all came to an end on one fateful night: when Elsa and Daniella were about to a dangerous trick known as the "Silken Noose." The person that was supposed to do a safety check prior to the act, Terry Bellini, was negligent to do what he was tasked as he was busy "screwing" one of the dancers. As a result, their safety mechanism failed and they plummeted to the ground. Daniella survived the injury, though Elsa did not and died afterwards or immediately. Joe Ferabbee took to immediate damage control by falsifying the evidence, forging his name in the safety log that day, and made Daniella retire; now working for the circus' box office.
For years, Daniella was haunted by her death and kept all sorts of mementos (photographs, magazines) to remember her; along with bringing her up in aerial practices with her daughter and forbidding Joe from ever making someone perform the "Silken Noose." When Mostyn Cartwright broke into her house and stole some of her belongings, the most devastating loss to her was a locket that was part of a set they each owned with two John Keats quotations that connect each other: "Two souls but with a single thought... two hearts beat as one." For a long while, she had been married to Terry without knowing that he committed involuntary manslaughter until Les Morrison, who had just been angry with his co-star trying to leave him, admitted so in her RV camper; along with Joe falsifying the evidence. This revelation awakes a lust for revenge in Daniella that kicks off the murder mystery as she kills Terry using a sniper rifle she stole from Curtis Ferabbee, sharpens one of the magic swords meant for Joe, though ends up killing Ashley Denton; and during her trek back from the abattoir after retrieving the amulet, accidentally knocks Curtis into the gas chamber.
Ironically, by rescuing the amulet and bringing it back to her place, both it and the photos of Elsa become the last clue that lead John Barnaby and Jamie Winter to who the murderer is.
