Beyond the Grave is the fourth episode of the third series of the popular ITV crime drama Midsomer Murders and was originally aired on 5th February 2000.

Synopsis[]

Barnaby and Troy are called in to investigate at the museum in Aspen Tallow when the painting of a local historical figure, Jonathan Lowrie, is slashed. When the museum's curator is subsequently assaulted and Lowrie's direct descendant is murdered, the detectives must unravel another mysterious knot. Barnaby does focus on one important clue, however: a packet of smoked mackerel inadvertently dropped in the cemetery. Meanwhile, they are joined by Nico, Cully's actor boyfriend, who has landed a part in a TV series as a detective sergeant.

Plot[]

In Aspern Tallow, Alan Bradford, museum curator is giving a tour about the battle of Aspern Tallow. "By 3:30 that afternoon, 1 August 1644, the fighting was over. The battle of Aspen Tallow had been lost. Royalists had fallen round the King like ripe corn but Jonathan Lowrie was not among the dead....He had fought that day bravely for King and country, paying dearly for the privilege. But who would care? He was a wealthy man, much in the King's favour, and had few friends in this Roundhead part of the world. He made his way down this very lane and paused here to gather strength and draw water from the well." Eleanor Bunsall rides by on her bicycle.

"He drank and moved on.... When he reached this point, Cromwellian thugs on the rampage caught sight of him from yonder. For the first time in his life, Jonathan Lowrie ran. Blood poured from a wound to his left shoulder, leaving a trail. But on he pressed. Until here before him stood the family home, Aspen Hall. Afternoon. And as he entered the great hall, he called out to his wife, "Florence, Florence," and as he reached this spot, so a Roundhead musketeer at the door shot him...dead. And in accordance with his wish to be buried where he fell that day, this became his last resting place, (Alan points to the grave) though I know for a fact he is not at peace."

Police Constable Angel says, "You're not trying to sell us a ghostie, Mr Bradford?" Alan says, "Why? Don't you believe in such things?" Angel says, "Well, have you seen it?" Alan says, "Many have. And before he walks abroad he gives fair warning, tolling the church bell mournfully. We are blessed with a fine portrait of Jonathan, crafted at the height of his powers by the artist Robert Walk - Wh..." The portrait of Jonathan is mutilated. Alan says, "You're a policeman. Do something." (Ominous music)

DCI Tom Barnaby gets the paper. He says, "Who says justice is dead? George Burton fell off the twig while being interviewed about his book." Joyce Barnaby says, "I gather you and George weren't close." Barnaby says, "Yeah, last of a gang. Hijacked four lorries in Dover, 1985. Nailed one of the drivers to a fence." Joyce says, "And then wrote a book about it?" Barnaby says, "That's all the rage, isn't it?" Cully asks if Nico can move in for two weeks. The leases is up on his flat. Barnaby says he's not moving in. Joyce says, "What about the box room, Tom? I mean, we could put your stuff in the garage." Barnaby asks, "Why is it when I say no, you both hear yes?" Nico comes downstairs yawning and into the kitchen. Cully says he has a part in a police drama. He's playing a detective sergeant. Cully says they were hoping he could shadow Gavin, see how it's done. ( Joyce laughs ) Cully asks, "Suppose a nice, juicy murder's too much to hope for then?" Nico comes out to the car and Cully shoves toast in his mouth. Barnaby says, "The best I can offer is a vandalized painting at Aspern Tallow Museum but so far, your detective sergeant is absolutely believable. You've observed rule number one - always keep the guv'nor waiting."

Sandra MacKillop tells her brother-in-law Charles MacKillop that she has a job restoring a painting at Aspern Tallow Museum. She has moved in with Charles. She asks Charles to go with her to the museum.

At Aspern Tallow Museum, PC Angel greets Barnaby and Nico. He says, "It's no wonder they broke in, sir. Fake alarm system, single mortise lock on the door, windows that don't close properly." DS Troy tells Barnaby that "someone's had a go at this painting." Troy tells Nico, "Rule number two - always treat the boss as if he's blind and stupid. Troy, Nico will be following you around for a week." Barnaby goes up to Alan Bradford. "I'm Inspector Barnaby. I'm surprised you've got anything left to curate, Mr Bradford. Fake alarm system on the front wall, single mortise lock on the door, windows that won't shut properly. Why don't you hang up a notice saying, "Please burgle me"?"

Alan says It's a question of the money. The museum is not everyone's idea of a fun day out. Alan tells Barnaby he was doing his Jonathan Lowrie death tour with half a dozen punters. The portrait was fine when they left. Sandra walks in. She says, "Sandra MacKillop. I'm here to repair the painting." Barnaby says, "MacKillop as in MacKillop Software?" Charles MacKillop introduces himself. Sandra's husband died last year.

Sandra asks if she can work at the museum. Alan says, "We can rope you off, turn you into an exhibit. Alan takes them to the damaged painting, "Jonathan Lowrie, royalist, philanthropist, classical scholar and all-round excellent egg." Nico says, "Yes, 1591 to 1644." Sandra says, "Somebody really meant business." Alan shows them a postcard of the painting. ( Eerie music ) Sandra stares at the postcard and gets very quiet.

Barnaby, et. all leave. He says, "There's nothing here for us, Troy. File it under 'forget'." Troy asks, "Did you notice a smell in there, sir?" Barnaby says "It's a museum, Troy, it's full of stuff long past its sell-by date." Nico says, "I did, Sergeant. Fish." Barnaby says, "Why choose that picture? Why not one of the others? And having broken in, why not nick something? What's your opinion, Nico?" Nico says, "Maybe it's a grudge against the Lowrie family." Barnaby says, "A man dies, his wife's a picture restorer trying to get back into the game. Lo and behold, a portrait is damaged and she's called in to fix it. Job creation? Or is that my nasty, suspicious mind?" The detectives see a package on the ground. Barnaby picks it up. Troy says, "Someone took a shortcut across the graveyard and it fell out of their shopping bag. Sir, two minutes ago there was nothing here for us. Now the world turns on a packet of smoked mackerel." Barnaby tells Troy to put it in the canteen freezer and to label it carefully or it will end up on the menu.

James Tate greets his housekeeper, Anne Quarritch, and asks about the news from the village. She says everyone's wondering about the damaged painting. Jim asks Anne to make some coffee. He views the newspaper article about George Burton. "All things come to him who waits," says Jim to himself.

Troy tells Nico, "Basically, the job of a DS is to keep a check on his governor. I'm lucky - old Tom's a good bloke to work for but he does look for trouble where there isn't any." Nico says, "He's also coming this way." Barnaby says, "Troy, what do you think of Alan Bradford?" Troy says, "I've handed it back to uniform, sir. I thought there was no further action." Barnaby says, "I want to show Nico how we work, you know the free exchange of ideas." Troy replies, "Bradford. Over the top, easily rattled, born to carry the can, otherwise harmless." Nico says, "He's a bit theatrical but, yeah, I agree with Gavin, harmless." Barnaby says, "Well, I've got news for you both. The excellent, wonderful and marvellous Mr Bradford has got a record." Troy responds, "Sir, you said, "Troy, there is nothing here for us. File it under 'forget'." Barnaby says, "That was before we found the smoked mackerel."

In the museum, Alan is unpacking a case. Jim Tate walks in. Alan tells him it is a suit of armor taken from the battlefield in 1644. The dead man's descendant has sent it to them from Champagne, Illinois. Alan tells Jim that Sandra is doing marvelously. She's quite a hit. Alan thinks they could build on it and open a craft center. Jim tells him to get his jacket and he'll buy him a pint and talk him out of it. Sandra is working on the painting. Visitors come to watch. When Sandra is alone, wind starts to blow inside the building. Flags hanging from the ceiling wave. A rocking chair starts rocking. Sandra screams "ALAN!! ALAN!!" Alan and Jim run back to the building. Alan looks around and asks Sandra what's wrong? She goes outside. Jim says, "I thought you said she was better.

Sandra goes over to the MacKillip software company. Charles wants her to sign some documents. Sandra says the painting of Jonathan Lowrie looks like her deceased husband. Sandra goes to talk to her therapist, Linda Marquiz. Linda tells her to say her 3-D mantra: David delight departed. Linda says, "There are no ghosts in Aspen Tallow Museum. Not in paintings, in rocking chairs or under stone slabs. They're only in your mind.

Jim reads a book and then goes out to Anne's house. Jim says, "I just want to say this then I'll go. I'm selling the cottage, Annie. Oh, it's a long story. Well, for one reason or another I've missed out on certain things like a wife and family. I've regretted it. Well, I'm too old for kids but not for a wife." He looks meaningfully at Anne. The church bells toll. Jim heads to the museum. Anne tells him he mustn't go. Alan hears the bells too and goes to the church. Alan walks quietly into the museum and someone punches him in the face. He falls to the ground.

At breakfast, Nico discusses the part he is going to play. He says, "The chap I'm playing doesn't have much to say for himself. But his boss has masses... Unlike Tom this bloke doesn't see crime with a capital K in every.." Barnaby walks in, "Morning Nico, you were saying?" Nico says, "The difference between you and the chief inspector here- He's not nearly so thorough." Barnaby says, "doesn't see crime with a Capital K in every package of smoked mackerel?" Barnaby goes on, "You're sitting in my place." The phone rings.

Alan shows the detectives what happened in the museum..."It was just here. I took a few steps forward, paused, looked round and wham, fist to the face." Alan says he heard the church bell. Jim Tate found Alan. Anne says "We heard the same thing that Alan did so we came over to investigate." Outside the church, Eleanor Bunsall rides up on her trike with Marcus Lowrie running behind her with his dog. Barnaby tells them they are police officers. Eleanor says, "Really? Well, then you're the ones who need help, not me. Do let me know if I can be of any assistance." Marcus says, "I am Marcus Lowrie, Jonathan's great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great great-grandson." Troy remarks, "Close, were you?" Marcus says, "The bell tolled in the middle of the night. Jonathan is risen and we have a question to ask him." Alan says, "The museum is closed and you can't go in." Eleanor says, "Alan, dear, don't be peevish. What would you mother say?" Alan replies, "She'd say, "Leave me alone. I've been dead for 10 years." Eleanor says, "Dead is an un-word, as well you know. Your mother is right here with us now and she says, "Don't be unkind to Eleanor, let her into the museum." Barnaby says, "And I can hear my old mother too, saying, "Don't let this lady come the old acid until you know who she is."

Alan says, "You're in the presence of Eleanor Bunsall, self-appointed queen of Aspern Tallow. What was the question you wanted to ask Jonathan?" Eleanor says, "Is that any of your business?" Barnaby replies, "Oh, please, indulge me." Marcus says, "I need to know what he did with the family's money. It went missing shortly after he died. We've scrimped and saved for 300 years but not anymore."

Inside the museum, Eleanor holds her hands over the burial slab of Jonathan Lowrie. She says, "I am Eleanor Margaret Bunsall. What have you got to say for yourself?" Marcus says, "Go on, speak to her." Eleanor says, "Quiet, Marcus. We need your help with the family silver, Jonathan. Any ideas?" Sandra walks in. Suddenly a packing crate catches fire. Marcus says, "He's here." Troy runs for the Fire extinguisher. Everyone runs out. Sandra runs down the street.

Barnaby tells Troy to ask Eleanor how she started the fire. Barnaby asks Alan if now would be a good time to mention his criminal record? He spent six months inside Reading Jail. Did he make any friends while he was there? Or any enemies? Alan says, "You mean you think I'm a target, Inspector?" Barnaby says, "Well, someone doesn't like you, do they? I mean, the painting, the nose." Alan says, "Perhaps that's why they moved the packing case, Inspector, it's not where I left it last night." Barnaby speaks to Nico who said he knew where the family silver was. Nico explains that the inscription on the burial slab is in Greek and says, "Here lies Jonathan Lowrie and all his worldly goods." Barnaby asks, "Did you tell Marcus?" Nico says, "He wanted to know." Nico asks Troy, "Would this be a typical sort of day?" Troy says, "Yup, Nutters and then more Nutters!"

Barnaby and Troy go to see Sandra MacKillip. Charles offers them a drink. Barnaby says the burning packing case was helped along with a little paraffin. Hardly the work of a ghost. Barnaby asks why did she rush away in such a hurry this afternoon? Sandra says, "Is that a crime? Sorry. So sorry. I was frightened. I was - I needed to find Charlie. Anything else?" Troy asks, "Yes. Why did Mr Bradford choose you to repair the painting?" Sandra says, "Because I'm the only restorer within 30 miles." Troy continues, "Seems odd that as you're trying to get back into the swing of things someone wrecks a painting." Sandra gets angry, "I resent that!" She runs away. Charlie explains that when David, his brother, died, Sandra had a breakdown. He and David were business partners. Barnaby asks about Eleanor Bunsall. Charlie snorts, "Rider of broomsticks and minder of other people's business." Charlie says she is harmless if you don't listen to the rubbish she talks.

Anne is cleaning in the museum. Jim shows up at the museum with a metal detector. Below, a man is walking around and listening to what is said upstairs. Jim says he wants to show that there is no silver in Jonathan Lowrie's grave so people don't waste their time digging it up. Jim tells Anne he is going to France, He has a house there in the south. He invites Anne to go with him. The man watches them through a grate. Anne moves the metal detector over Lowrie's slab and it beeps. Anne says, "Sounds like I've just struck gold."

Barnaby, Troy and Nico walk in and Barnaby says, "It's almost this time yesterday, almost to the minute. Troy, give me your hand." Barnaby holds Troy's hand so that the light comes through the window and gets hot. Barnaby says, "That's how it happened. Old glass. Maybe 200 years old. Uneven with a prism in it." Troy says, "Whoever moved the packing case knew this place very well." Barnaby continues, "Like a curator. Or a trustee. Or a cleaner."

Sandra tells Linda Marquiz that the police think she cut the portrait herself to get the job of repairing it. She says she keeps thinking she sees David standing over her, that he's actually there.

At the museum, Sandra works on the painting. Visitors move through the room. Alan goes to his office. The door slams and a statue starts to fall over and crashes on the ground. Sandra looks around and says, "David...David..Is that you." Alan say, "Sandra. Sandra? You alright?"

At night, Sandra and Eleanor are walking. Eleanor says, "You're quite right to call me in on this, Sandra. Why didn't you do so earlier?" Sandra says, "I should have, I know. I used to tell you everything in the past, but...er..." Eleanor says, "It's Charles, isn't it? Typical man. Thinks he's the only one who can help." Sandra says, "Well, even he thinks I'm going mad. He's too polite to say." Eleanor says, "Madness is an unword, dear. It does not exist. There are only varying degrees of sanity. Yours and mine just happen to be more varied than most." Sandra is worried about all the strange things that have been happening - the portrait, the rocker moving, the bell, the fire - people say it's Jonathan Lowrie but Sandra thinks David is trying to reach her. At David's grave, Eleanor holds her arms out and closes her eyes. She says, "What the devil is going on? Out with it, man."

Marcus Lowrie sneaks into the church. Johnathon's burial slab is opened up. Marcus says, "Bastards! You stole it. You stole my inheritance. Give it to me. Give it to me, I said." Someone clubs him on the head. Sandra and Eleanor run into the museum and Eleanor shines her flashlight on Marcus's body.

The next morning, the detectives arrive. Alan asks who has done this terrible thing. Troy tells Barnaby it's Marcus Lowrie, sir. He came to dig up the family fortune. Someone got there before him. Dr. Bullard says he doesn't think there was a fortune. They found pennies in a leather bag though. He was hit with the corner of something solid and square. He'd been hit six times. Eleanor Bunsall reported it. Lowrie's dog barks and whines outside. Barnaby says to put him in the car. Barnaby tells Jim a security system should be installed.

Back in their car, Troy asks why there were pennies in the grave. Nico says Johnathon Lowrie was a greek scholar. He would have taken pennies to give to the ferryman to row him over the River Styx. Troy makes a sharp turn. Barnaby says, "Rule number 7: Never use the indicator- it keeps the other drivers on their toes."

At Eleanor Bunsall's, Barnaby and Troy question Eleanor while Nico deals with her tricycle tire. Barnaby asks, "What were you doing in the graveyard at midnight, Miss Bunsall?" Eleanor says, "Is that any of your business?" Barnaby says, "Indulge me again." Eleanor says, "Insomnia. I often walk at night." Troy asks, "In a graveyard? Alone?" Eleanor says, "I have so many friends there." Barnaby says, "So there you are, chatting away with a few old friends, you hear Marcus scream, you run inside and there he is dead." Eleanor says, "Not dead, Inspector, merely murdered." Barnaby says, "Oh, I'm sorry. Dead is an unword. Did you see anyone else? His un-killer? He must have still been there, in the museum." Eleanor says, "If I'd have known that I'd have stayed on, had it out with him. I was armed, Inspector." She pulls out a spray bottle. Troy says, "Sir, this is CS gas." Eleanor says, "Yes, I picked it up in France at the World Cup where it came in very handy, I can tell you." Troy says, "Miss Bunsall, it is illegal in this country and I'm confiscating it." Eleanor says, "In that case, I shall refuse to cooperate further." Barnaby says, "You've already told us all we need to know, except, of course, for who was with you last night." Eleanor says, "My lips are sealed in accordance with my version of the Hippocratic oath." Troy asks, "Does nothing die in your world, Miss Bunsall? You know, people, plants, animals?" Eleanor says, "You're smarter than you look, young man. We are all part of an endless saga. We fade, yes, but only to reappear in ever-brighter colours." Troy says, "So you can talk to Jonathan Lowrie, the dickie birds or even a Christmas tree just as easily as you can talk to us?" Eleanor says, "More so, because they appreciate what I say."

Barnaby and Troy see Charlie and Alan. Alan is worried about Sandra. He says, "The portrait gets slashed. Sandy's the obvious choice to fix it. Put that the other way round, though - she'll be chosen to repair it, so let's cut one up. What's more, it's a portrait that reminds her of her dead husband. Which puts him firmly back in her mind. Then, bells ring in the night, the packing cases catch fire. Yesterday I left her alone in the museum for two minutes during which time a bust of Charles I fell to the ground. Sandra says it moved of its own accord." Charlie admits he has been following Sandy around and he found her and Eleanor in the museum with Lowrie's dead body.

Jim Tate goes to speak to Annie. She tells him she will come with him to France. Jim wants to leave in a few days. He tells Annie he doesn't want the police trampling all over his past life. They kiss.

Jim goes home. He turns on the light. He sees a man sitting on his couch. The man says, "I reckon you were the banker for George Burton and his cronies. You shafted them. And now they're all dead, you can spend the money." Jim gives him 100 quid. The man says he wants 100 thousand. Jim hits him over the head with a bottle. The man slumps. Jim goes to make a phone call. The man gets up and smashes a chair on Jim.....

The detectives stop at a pub. Nico goes to get drinks and sandwiches. Barnaby tells Troy to find out how much Sandra MacKillip is worth.

The detectives pass Anne who is out walking. They pick her up and go to Jim's house. The house is a mess. Anne tells him he was going on holiday. Anne says Jim was in the book about George Burton. Last of a gang on whom our Mr Tate was keeping a very close eye. Suitcase packed, ready to go. Anne says he was going to southern France. Olive trees, vineyards, sea. That's what he promised Anne.

At the museum, Sandra and Charlie arrive to get the painting so she can finish it at home. The detectives arrive. Barnaby explains how the statue was broken. Someone opened the window from the outside and then they pulled on a nylon thread, a bit of fish line maybe, which was looped around the top of the figure and when the figure smashed they pulled the thread clear. Barnaby asks Troy if he smells anything? Fish. Barnaby asks Alan if there is a cellar. The detectives go downstairs. A man whacks Barnaby and Troy with a shovel and punches Alan in the stomach and then runs out. Troy runs after the man. Troy loses him. Barnaby says, "You're paid to catch him, Troy, not to lose him." Troy says to Nico, "Rule number 24, don't expect any sympathy."

Barnaby goes to see Dr. Catherine "Kath" Bullard. She tells him there is no real damage to his arm. He will have a nasty bruise though. Barnaby asks Kath, "If I wanted to drive someone over the edge, could I do it?" Kath says, "Yes, of course you could. That would depend on your victim but you can induce paranoia in all sorts of ways. Psychologically, chemically, surgically." Kath tells them she did send Sandra to a counsellor over the death of her husband- Linda Marquiz.

Sandra goes to talk to Eleanor. Eleanor tells Sandra she had a word with David. He didn't actually speak to her. She just put herself in his place. Eleanor says David wants Sandra to be the fun-loving, confident girl she always was. Eleanor asks about her diet. Sandra says Charlie does all the cooking. Eleanor says to take her through each days' menu.

Troy and Nico bring in the cellar dweller's gear. No name for him and no sign of the murder weapon. One round of sandwiches. one pocket-knife, army, one donkey jacket, blue. Barnaby tells Troy to get on the solicitor. He also asks Troy to do a bit of house breaking. Barnaby goes to talk to Annie while Troy is breaking into her house. Nico and Cully are going to search Jim Tate's cottage. Annie says the man who's been hiding in the museum cellar threatened to kill her. She was once married to him. Ralph Edward Bailey who was doing 10 years for manslaughter. He absconded from Durham Jail four weeks ago. Annie tells the detectives Ralph is hiding out at Jim Tate's cottage. Nico and Cully arrive at the cottage and hear noises upstairs. They go up the stairs where Ralph is waiting in the attic with a weapon. Ralph hears police sirens, slams the attic door in Nico's face and Nico clutches his eye. The police run upstairs to nab him, but he escapes in Troy's car.

The next morning, the detectives go to see Linda Marquiz without Nico. Barnaby doesn't want Nico to see their darker side. Barnaby says to Troy, "Last night, you got from the station to Jim Tate's cottage in four minutes flat. Everything I ever said about your driving, I take back." They pick up breakfast.

At Marquiz's house, the detectives see Charlie MacKillop coming out of the house at 8.30am. Charlie says he has needed counselling too. Barnaby talks to Linda Marquiz- he knows about Linda's secret: hеrοin chic.

Next the detectives go speak to Alan Bradford. Barnaby thinks he had a relationship with Sandra. Alan says he tried to fall for Sandra. But he prefers men. He has never been attracted to the opposite sеx.

Troy reports on Sandra MacKillop and her will. Mr Jocelyn drew it up for her in favour of her sister in Canada. She owns half the company which is valued at just over 10 million.

At the funeral for Johnathon Lowrie, Eleanor Bunsall stops the service. She says, "Inspector, all is not well down there." Barnaby has the coffin brought up. He sends Troy down into the grave to look for squatters. Troy uncovers the body of James Tate.

At the Barnaby home, the dog is sitting in Barnaby's chair. PC Angel is coming to pick him up. Nico comes in and says, "Tom, I think we found James Tate for you. George Burton and Co stole £3 million worth of stuff, it cashed in at £1 million. They hired an accountant, Michael Whistler, to pay off safe houses, car dealers, lawyers..." Cully says, "Then he invested what was left over but one or two of the gang, who were all inside by now, wondered whether it really had boiled down to a million or was it a million and a half?" Barnaby says, "And if so, what happened to the other half-million?" Nico says, "They sent a heavy to see Whistler and he'd gone. Disappeared into thin air. With the gang all inside he had time to reinvent himself. Plastic surgery if necessary. Then pop up five years later in Aspern Tallow."

Barnaby and Troy go speak to Ralph Bailey who was found on a dockside in Hull. He was trying to get work on a Polish trawler. He asks for a solicitor. Charlie drops Sandra off at the museum with the finished portrait. The door slams. On the wall are the words David Delight Departed. Sandra runs out of the museum screaming. Alan goes inside and sees nothing.

Kath Bullard comes by the station. She says. "Anne Quarritch brought Sandra to my surgery, as near to the edge as I've seen her. She claims to have seen writing on the museum wall. David, delight, departed. It's a mantra which Linda Marquis taught her. Barnaby calls Sandra and asks her to meet him. He tells her, "Sandra, you are as sane as I am. I can prove it to you. At first, I thought someone wanted you dead but now I believe that's the last thing they want. Will you help me?"

At the Police Station, Troy brings by the drug info from Dr Bullard. Barnaby is looking at words on the wall produced by a projector.

Barnaby and Troy go to speak to Anne. Barnaby ask, "How did Ralph know that Jim Tate had money? Annie says, "He must have overheard Jim talking about his place in France one day in the museum." Alan asks, "Can I ask something? How did old Bunsall know it was Jim in that grave?" Barnaby says, "The power of extended logic. Ultra common sense, if you like. We've all got it but she uses it." Barnaby asks Alan. "you didn't know that Ralph was hiding in your cellar?" Alan says, "I was engrossed in other things such as my work. Trying to shine a light in dark places, like Aspern Tallow."

That night, Sandra and Linda Marquiz go to the museum. Sandra sees a dark clothed figure. She says, "Look." Linda says, "What?" Sandra says, "There. Can't you see him?" Linda says, "See what?" Barnaby come in. He tells Troy to go run through the ghost with a sword. Charlie MacKillip takes off his hood. Sandra says, "Charlie. What have I ever done to you?"

Charlie and Linda are arrested. On the brochure for MacKillip Software, the Directors of the company are Sandra MacKillop and Charles MacKillop, in equal measure. David left his share of the business to Sandra and Charlie wanted it. Charlie couldn't kill Sandra because then her share of the money would go to her sister. So Charlie tried to get power of attorney over Sandra by driving her mad. The clinic Linda was in says Linda wasn't just hooked just on hеrοin but also on a drսg called Zolazepam, which is a mind bender, and Linda kept back a supply of it, just in case. And she hooked Sandra MacKillop on it. Linda denies that she did it. She says Charlie put it In the meals he's always cooking for Sandra. Then a couple of months back, they withdrew the drug.. it's a drսg that's harder to kick than hеrοin, with 54 known side effects - paranoia, confusion, insecurity, panic, disorientation, the lot. Charlie tells the police that the scheme was Linda's idea. Barnaby tells Troy to split them up into different cells. On the way out, Sandra asks Linda "Why?" Linda says, "Because you are one of those women who's had everything thrown your way, from love to money. I just...wanted a little of both."

Charlie tells the police that the slashed painting was Linda. Chosen for his likeness to David. The bell at night, the broken china was done by Charlie. The packing cases too. The writing on the wall was Linda. Charlie says he hit Alan Bradford. Barnaby says he is holding Ralph Bailey. Ralph says Charlie killed Marcus. He set up a slide projector. He was testing it when Marcus came in. Charlie hit him with the projector.

Barnaby sends Troy off to look for the projector. Troy searches his house. Alan helps. Nico says he could have chucked it anywhere. Troy and Nico go to search a trash can and find the projector. Barnaby brings in the projector. Troy says, "No matter how well you cleaned it up, Charlie, there'll be bits of him on it somewhere." Barnaby and Troy go to speak to Ralph Bailey. He says, "Charlie now says he saw you bury James Tate and he's made a statement to that effect.

At the Barnaby home, Angel comes to pick up the dog. Angel says he's been sick from canteen grub- fish pate Wednesday, smoked mackerel. In the paper, an article says "Last night, police in Causton charged two local men with the murders of Michael Stuart Whistler, also known as James Tate, last surviving member of the George Burton Gang, and of Marcus Jonathan Lowrie."
