Dead in the Water is the second episode of the eighth series of the popular ITV crime drama Midsomer Murders and originally aired on 17th October 2004.

Synopsis[]

While attending the Midsomer Regatta with his wife Joyce and daughter Cully, Det. Chief Inspector Barnaby finds himself investigating the murder of the rowing club's chairman who is found floating in the river.

Plot, Part 1[]

DCI Tom Barnaby, Cully and Joyce come to the Midsomer Regatta. Barnaby is not excited as it is crowded. Joyce is interested in buying a boat. Cully reads from the program "Midsomer Rowing Club Veterans."

MURDER 1: A rower falls off the back of one of the boats. There is a man floating in the water. It is Guy Sweetman.

The police arrive and bring the body to shore. Barnaby suspends all rowing until further notice. Phillip Trent is not pleased. Dr. Bullard reports he is dead. He is Guy Ernest Sweetman, chairman of the Midsomer Rowing Club. Clare Bonavita, rowing club treasurer introduces herself to the detectives. Clare says, "Guy really did live up to his surname. He was the sweetest man." Barnaby says, "Whoever killed him disagreed." Clare says, "Yes. Yes, some irate husband or jealous boyfriend, no doubt. Guy didn't so much play the field as the entire countryside." Clare says he lived in Morton Shallows.

The detectives borrow a speedboat. Barnaby relaxes in the back while Scott drives. Barnaby asks, "Can't this boat go any slower, Sergeant?" Scott says, "That's the beauty of river boats, sir. They slow life down, let you think." They are passed by the Midsomer Rowers in a longboat. Barnaby says, "If your good friend had just been murdered, would you look so cheerful about it?"

A young, pretty blond, Hettie Trent, comes running to the dock to ask her dad about the murder. Phillip Trent tells her it was Guy. Teammate, John Parkway says, "A quick tidy-up of Guy's office might not go amiss." Phillip says, "Good idea, John. I'm sorry, Het. I really am." Hettie says, "No, you're not, Dad! You're over the moon!" Phillip sees the detectives coming to the dock. He introduces them to the detectives. Phillip says, "Rowed together at Oxford, kept up the friendship. Guy's private life was a most public affair, Inspector. Guy was a serial philanderer. Swore that every woman he met was the love of his life. The latest was called Sandra Tate. I think Sandra was a bit special. Even mentioned marriage at one point." Scott asks Hettie if she knew Guy and she says, "no...not really."

Sergeant Scott goes to look at Guy's office. Barnaby goes in the bar and requests a coffee. The bartender is Vic Lynton. Scott searches the desk. He asks Trent if "Hettie had a thing with Guy?" Trent says, "Well, I think there was some sort of..."

Vic Lynton tells Barnaby that "this murder isn't linked to the chairman's extra-mural activities. It's about something much closer to home. Moored downstream from here is a boat called the Arabella Jane, belonging to Mr Philip Trent. He, Mr. Parkway and the chairman had taken to meet aboard her every Friday evening. Last Friday... there were words. A definite rumpus, sir, which I myself heard. About eleven. It being quiet here, I'd taken a stroll along the towpath. As I passed the boat, I heard the chairman being verbally abused, along the lines of, "For Christ sakes, Guy, you never could be relied upon" and, "How dare you let us down at the last minute!" There was even, "After all the work we've done, I could bloody kill you!" Verbatim." Barnaby says, "Who did most of the shouting?" Vic says, "Mr Trent, sir, as per usual" Barnaby says, "Sweetman left the scene, and Parkway and Trent went back on board?" Vic says, "I had a feeling... in the way of these things, that someone else was below decks, trying to keep a low profile."

Trent comes up to the bar and asks Barnaby, "Is there any chance we can crank up the regatta again?" Barnaby says, "Yes" Barnaby and Scott go outside the club to eat lunch. Barnaby says to Scott, "It seems there was some sort of row last Friday on Trent's boat. He keeps it moored downriver. Guy Sweetman, Parkway and Trent, they all fell out. I bet you the other half of this very warm beer that Parkway did a sweep of Guy's office soon after we arrived." Scott says, "I saw that." Barnaby says, "Lynton reckons there was probably a fourth person on board. He's got no idea who. They'd been meeting on that boat every Friday night for two months. But why on the boat? Why not in the clubhouse?" Scott says, "I'm with Mrs Bonavita on this one. I think there's an angry husband or jealous boyfriend somewhere, possibly an angry father. Hettie Trent is also one of Guy Sweetman's...conquests." Hettie is kissing young rower, Henry Charlton, on the dock. Barnaby says, "Well, she seems to be over it now."

Barnaby and Scott go down to the dock. Clare is giving Henry instructions. Henry paddles off in a boat. Clare is his coach. Barnaby asks about the team members not seeing eye to eye. "Do you know why they should have fallen out?" Clare says, "If I were you, Inspector, I'd take what Vic Lynton tells you with a pinch of salt." Barnaby says, "Barmen, Mrs Bonavita, they know all the gossip." A loudspeaker calls Attention! A starter pistol goes off. There is cheering from the sidelines, shouts of encouragement, and clapping.

In the club, Vic Lynton places a call to see where Sandra is. No luck finding her. Scott says to Barnaby, "Sandra Tate- The girlfriend Vic Lynton mentioned. There are no records of her in any of the usual databases. That's CRO, voters' register or the NHS." Barnaby says, "Unless we find her quick, Scott, she's either a main suspect or another victim, in which case she'll bob up somewhere downriver. Got anything else?" Scott says, "According to the custody sergeant, Clare Bonavita was also one of Guy Sweetman's conquests. This time last year, her husband Freddie threatened to kill him. Belted him on the jaw."

Plot, Part 2[]

At the morgue, Dr. Bullard says, "He was killed about 2,500 metres from where he was found. That's based on time in the water, rate of flow, weight of body. He was struck on the head twice by a piece of local stone. Here are the bits. Then he was dragged to the water's edge and held under till he drowned. Dragged through long grass, from the state of his shoes. Any time between 10pm Friday and 4am Saturday."

Barnaby tells Scott to "Get a team to Morton Shallows. The whole length of the village. Any signs of struggle, people who saw anything, the murder weapon..." Scott says, "I do know the drill, sir."

Meanwhile, at the regatta, Cully and Joyce lay out on the grass. Cully says, "Typical family day out, really. We arrive somewhere and ten minutes later a serious crime is committed. Exit the old man." Joyce says, "I think he plans it that way." Cully says, "And he took the car!" Joyce says, "Come on. We'll walk to Morton Fendle and take the bus." They look at boats while walking. Joyce says, "That one would be too modern for your father. He'll want brass and mahogany everywhere. Like that one, for example." Cully says, "It's a bit tatty, Mum." Joyce says, "Nothing a coat of varnish won't cure." Phillip Trent and John Parkway walk to the boat they were talking about.

Inside Trent's boat, Ivan Hawkins complains, "You said seven o'clock. It's ten past." Trent says, "Well spotted, Ivan. Have a drink." Ivan says, "I'd rather get down to business, Trent." Trent says, "Right. I was going to suggest that Guy's death is a blessing in disguise. It means we can carry on as if nothing had happened."

At Guy Sweetman's house, Barnaby and Scott examine the crime scene. There's blood on the grass and gouges in the mud, presumably where he was dragged. No murder weapon- Probably in the river. They speak to Guy's next door neighbor, Mrs. Sharp. Mrs. Sharp says, "Guy and I were great friends." Mrs. Sharp doesn't know where Sandra Tate works, where she lives. She's not sure how old Sandra is. She moved in with Guy about two weeks ago. And then moved out again. The detectives go inside the house and look around. Scott finds a classic little black book.

They come to the river and find a boat to get across the river. Clare tells Scott not to dip the oars so deeply. At Clare's house, the detectives ask to see Clare's husband. Clare says, "He's gone to our villa in Malta. It's been a perfectly amicable split, but we have decided to call it a day." Barnaby asks, "There is one other thing you could help us with. Perhaps you could tell us why Guy and Philip Trent and John Parkway had taken to meeting on board the Arabella Jane most Fridays." Clare says, "They used it as a comittee room. They went on into the small hours. Regatta business." Barnaby asks, "Can you tell me where I can find Mr Parkway?" Clare says, "If he's not on regatta duty, try him at home. It's 8, The Maltings, Morton Fendle." After the detectives leave, Clare's husband, Freddie Bonavita, comes out of the back room. He thanks her for lying for him. Freddie says, "You did it for yourself. You don't want them keeping me here in England. I'm sure Henry doesn't either." Clare says, "All Henry cares about is becoming a champion. I can make that happen for him if I can just keep him focused. Freddie says, "As soon as I've gathered all my documents, I'll be off and you can focus together as much as you like. By the way, much as I disliked Guy Sweetman, I didn't kill him. Hats off to whoever did, though."

At the regatta, another race starts. Hettie asks her dad for money so she can take a vacation. She asks for £800. Trent tells her he doesn't have much but says he'll sort something out.

The detectives go to see John Parkway. They see John giving money to David Cooke. David runs down Scott on his way out and goes off on a motorcycle. John claims he is an ex-pupil of his. John says, "I lent him some money and, well, he's paid me back." Scott writes down his name and where he works-Midsomer Sawmills, up at Morton Woods. John says the row on the Arabella Jane was about Guy forgetting to recall last year's trophies, so some of them won't be presented on Saturday. He claims there were only 3 of them on the boat.

There is cheering at the regatta. Back at Clare's house, she tells Henry he did well. She cautions him to have a decent meal, stay off the booze and get an early night. Henry says, "You're the boss, Coach. An early night it is." Henry rubs her shoulder and almost kisses her. Phillip Trent comes in the house. He wants to borrow money from Freddie. He tells Clare he needs it for Hettie to go on holiday to Bali. Henry listens in from the stairs. In his room, he sneaks out the window. Later, Clare goes to Henry's room to look for him and finds him gone.

Barnaby takes Cully and Joyce out to dinner and Scott comes along. Phillip Trent is playing the piano in the restaurant. Barnaby and Scott go to talk to Trent. They ask for his address. He says he is camping on the Arabella Jane. Barnaby asks for an explanation for what happened on board the Arabella Jane. Cully says, "Dad, this was supposed to be a quiet evening out. Family." Joyce says, "You know who that chap is, Cully? He owns the boat we were looking at yesterday evening." Barnaby says, "Scott, while he's playing that piano, I fancy a shufty at the boat. Won't be long. Sorry." Cully looks furious.

Plot, Part 3[]

The detectives go to the boat. Scott finds a mousetrap. They find bills, credit cards, bank statements. Most are at the limit. And not a sign of an estate agent's brochure. While searching, they hear Hettie and Henry. Hettie tries to get Henry to come on the boat, but he is scared of rats. They leave. Barnaby tells Scott to go to Clare Bonavita's house tomorrow. If Clare has lent Trent and Parkway money, she'll know the state of their finances. Two men who are broke have a row with a third man who's dead two hours later.

In the morning, Scott rows over to Clare's house. Clare and Henry are at the regatta. Scott knocks on Clare's door. He tries the door handle. He goes inside the house and looks through papers. Freddie comes in and finds him. Scott says, "You're supposed to be in Malta." Freddie says, "You're supposed to be a policeman, not a housebreaker." At the police station, Barnaby and Scott interview Freddie. He has a record for fraud, malicious wounding, actual bodily harm. The last charge got him five years in jail. He runs a finance company. Barnaby asks if he lent any money to Philip Trent? John Parkway? Guy Sweetman? Freddie looks at his lawyer and says, "All three, against my better judgement. They're Clare's friends not mine. She appealed to my better nature. I think Guy needed £30,000, Phil Trent fifty... and Johnny Parkway two, three." Barnaby asks, "Why did your wife lie to us? Why did she say you'd left the country, when you hadn't?" Freddie says, "I asked her to. I didn't want you digging into my past, coming up with reasons to keep me here, which you seem to be doing." Barnaby says, "You threatened to kill him, didn't you? What was that about? Jealousy? Injured pride? How do you cope with Henry Charlton? I mean, he's moved into your house and your wife seems very er... ..attached to him." Freddie says, "The fire went out of our marriage years ago. That's why I'm leaving. No hard feelings, no broken bones, just...the end of the road. So, if you think I killed Guy Sweetman out of jealousy, you're mistaken."

Vic brings a drink to Clare outside the restaurant. Hettie comes up. Hettie says, "You wanted to talk about Henry." Clare says, "Yes. ..Now, I'm not saying it's your fault, but he didn't come in until two o'clock this morning. I heard him, because he was drunk. This is not the way to become a champion and Henry IS a potential champion." Hettie says, "Out of whom you'll make a fortune, Clare. Maybe there's another reason you're doing it. Something to do with the years passing and men like Guy Sweetman dropping you at the first sign of a wrinkle?" Clare says, And what did Guy Sweetman ditching you so unceremoniously prove?" Hettie replies, "Guy and I had our fun and then went our separate ways. Me to Henry and him to Sandra Tate, the new love of his life, the one he was actually going to marry. Try and keep up with the gossip. Or have you and Henry just been too busy for that?" Clare looks pissed.

Barnaby and Scott go down the river in a boat. They stop at Mr. Stevens house. They are using a room at the Stevens house to watch through the window overlooking the river. They go to Morton Woods to speak to David Cooke. He is working on logs. Barnaby tells David blackmail is a crime. David says, "Leave me alone, all right, I'm done. I want a solicitor. "

Barnaby talks to John Parkway again. He tells Barnaby that Guy Sweetman sold agricultural machinery in Suffolk. "He was found in bed with the MD's wife. Then he came here and went to work for Summerley's. The MD's a bachelor, so no pitfalls. He was still working for them when he died." John says, "By some curious stroke of fate, I'm doing the job I always wanted to." Barnaby says, "Happy, are you, in spite of a brat like Cooke blackmailing you? You tell me why and I'll stop him." John says, "I was, erm... 19. My parents didn't have any money. I wanted to go to Loughborough. It seemed impossible. Then I saw an advert in a... magazine. "Wanted for speciality film: young men, fit, clean and presentable." I applied and got the job. A so-called "adult movie." By today's standards, of course, it's as tame as a teddy bear. It's almost... ..laughable. In any other job it wouldn't matter, but I'm a teacher of young children." John says David Cooke's father has a copy. But it's David who's blackmailing him. Barnaby tells him he'll be in touch.

Phillip Trent finds another rat on the boat and disposes of it. Hettie arrives and gives him a kiss. Phillip tells Hettie that Barnaby will get around to speaking with her. Hettie says, "You think I had something to do with Guy's death." Phillip says, "Of course I don't. Did you?" Hettie walks away.

Barnaby and Scott go to see David Cooke. Barnaby tells Scott there will be no violence on his watch as Scott cracks his knuckles. At Cooke's house, David sees Barnaby and runs to the back door where Scott trips him running out. Barnaby asks for the tape that he is blackmailing Parkway with. Or they can speak to his father if David would prefer. Scott goes with Cooke to find the tape.

Cully and Joyce look at boat brochures. Barnaby arrives home. He sees the brochures about boats. Joyce wants to go and look at one, when he has got time. (Phone rings) It's Jocelyn, the solicitor.

At the Stevens house, Scott watches Trent go to his boat and snaps photos. Barnaby comes by and tells Scott that Guy Sweetman left Sandra Tate his house. She was the great love of his life. Trent said he was going to marry her. It puts her at the top of their list. All they have to do now is find her. Scott sees John Parkway come to the boat and snaps photos. Barnaby has brought Scott some cake and some coffee. Scott asks if Mrs. Barnaby made it. Barnaby says he wouldn't do that to him.

Plot, Part 4[]

On the boat, Trent asks, "Where's Ivan?" Parkway says, "Having second thoughts." Trent says, "Shouldn't think so. He needs this more than we do."

Back at the house, Scott says, "It's not so much that you stopped me smacking David Cooke, sir, but... Well, you bent a few rules yourself. You broke in the Arabella Jane, didn't you?" Barnaby says, "That was the proper prosecution of a legitimate enquiry. Whereas, you thumping Cooke with an E, that'd be personal." Scott says, "And me breaking into Freddie Bonavita's house?" Barnaby says, "That was for the good of the investigation. Look what you found. Freddie Bonavita. Plus the fact that his wife lied for him." Scott spies Ivan coming to the boat and takes photos.

At the police station, Scott finds Barnaby asleep in the dining area. Scott says, "Our custody sergeant knows everybody in the world and then a few more. His name is Ivan Hawkins, sir. He owns a jeweller's shop in Causton. Criminal Records Office says he has a criminal record back to 1982. Theft of 12 Cartier watches. There's a repossession order on the shop. He hasn't paid his mortgage." Barnaby says, "And this man was meeting Guy Sweetman and the others aboard the Arabella Jane?" Scott says, "All four of them in debt. Three to Freddie Bonavita. Would you want to owe him money?" Barnaby wonders what they are doing on the boat. An insurance scam? Are they planning to rob Ivan Hawkins with his collusion? This week's would be a good choice. Half of Causton's pissed every night. And the police are stretched to the limit.

Sandra Tate arrives at Guy's house. Mrs. Sharp drops by.

Barnaby and Scott get a call from Mrs. Sharp. Sandra Tate's turned up. Mrs. Sharp greets them. She says, "Mr Barnaby? I've told her about Guy. Murdered." Sandra Tate asks, "Who did it? One of those dreadful rowing club people, I expect. They're a cliquey immoral bunch of self serving... " Barnaby says, "Miss Tate, did you know that Guy had made a will in your favour?" Sandra says, "Yes, I did." She didn't kill him for it. She's been in France. Deauville. If they'd looked under her married name, they would have found me. Lynton. Her ex-husband is the steward at the rowing club.

At the regatta another race is going on. Women rowers. Barnaby and Scott go to speak to Vic Linton. They want to know why he didn't tell them he was married to Sandra Tate. They think that Vic was pointing them from Sandra towards Phillip Trent as a suspect. They wonder why. Did he think Sandra had killed Guy? Vic offers them coffee.

Barnaby wants to know if Scott did you do a CRO check on Lynton. Vic Lynton: Staff Sergeant Royal Artillery stationed at Karlsruhe. Left the army five years ago and married then divorced. No children, no police record. Lives in Causton on his tod. Keen fisherman.

Next the detectives go to see Hettie Trent. She works in a shop called Femme Fatale. Hettie says she was at a club with Henry Charlton. Scott says, "Thing is, you're in Guy Sweetman's address book, along with about 500 others. We're asking them all how it was. So, how was it for you?" Hettie says she is due for a coffee break in five minutes. She admits her dad was unhappy about her relationship with Guy.

A person on a motorcycle arrives at Guy's house. They attack Sandra. Mrs. Smart saw them arrive and the attacker pushes her aside and runs out. Sandra goes to the hospital.

At home, Barnaby watches the porn tape. Joyce comes in to see what he's doing. Barnaby says, "Think you're a bit young to be watching this." Joyce asks, "Where does this come from? This? Some oik is using this to blackmail one of my suspects. Suspect's playing the lead. ( Heavy breathing ) Barnaby suggests an early night.

At the Stevens, Scott sees Trent, et. al. leave the boat. He calls Barnaby. Trent, Parkway and Ivan are on the way to his shop, Parkway tells Trent to pull over. He won't go through with the robbery. Barnaby and Scott go to the jewelry shop. Ivan and Trent pull up. The policeman watching calls Barnaby. Ivan and Trent go inside.

Meanwhile, everyone is at the Regatta. It's Finals Day. Everyone is cheering Henry, who wins.

In the shop, Trent duct tapes Ivan to a chair. He punches him to make it more convincing. He duct tapes his mouth and punches him again. The police come in the shop while Trent is emptying the jewelry cases. ( Muffled groaning) Barnaby pulls the tape off Ivan's mouth. Ivan says, "You bastard, Trent! You absolute bastard."

At the Regatta, someone comes up to speak to Clare. Clare hugs Henry. She introduces him to British Olympic Committee scouts.

Plot, Part 5[]

Barnaby and Scott bring Parkway back his tape. Barnaby says, "The robbery - you pulled out at the last minute, didn't you?" Parkway says, "En route to it, yes. I wasn't afraid of being caught, Sergeant, so much as facing the kids I teach." Barnaby says, "There's only one thing on this tape you can be arrested for. Your mullet haircut and the flares you wore briefly in the first scene. Although I agree school governors might see it differently. Look, this might be an excellent time for you to tell us what the row aboard the Arabella Jane was all about. Oh, it's not the "honour among thieves" thing, is it? Look, don't you be so stupid. They're in custody, and we've been two steps ahead of you all week." Parkway says, "Guy came aboard the boat that Friday. (Flashback: Guy says, "I'm afraid I have some bad news. I'm calling the robbery off. I'm sorry. I know you were all depending on it. I was too. If it goes ahead, I shall inform the police." Trent says, "You're serious, aren't you?" Trent was furious. Wouldn't let it go. Lynton was there with his dog. Trent yells, "After all the work we've done, I could bloody kill you!" Guy says, "I mean it, Phil. That's the end of it." Trent says, "For Christ's sake, Guy! You never could be relied upon. Trust you to let us down at the last minute!" ( Dog barks) Barnaby says, "Two hours later, Guy Sweetman was dead." Parkway says, "He told Sandra Tate about the robbery. She didn't like it. Said she wouldn't marry a thief."

Barnaby and Scott go to the hospital. Sandra says, "I gave Guy the ultimatum Friday morning. The day he was killed. And I meant it. If the robbery had taken place, I'd have left him." Barnaby asks, "What happened then? Do you know where he went?" Sandra says, "Yes, I do. And who he meant to see." Vic Lynton enters the building with flowers. Scott tackles him. Barnaby asks, "What are you doing here, Mr Lynton?" Vic says, "Visiting my ex-wife, sir. Is that a crime? I didn't know that." He sits by her bedside. "Who did this to you, Sandy?"

Barnaby and Scott interview Ivan. Ivan says, "This man, whom I now know to be Philip Trent, came to my house in a balaclava and...threatened me. If I didn't take him to the shop, he'd kill me, then kill the missus, who's down at her sister's. So I co-operated." Scott plops down photos of Ivan meeting on the boat with Trent. In his cell, Trent is eating. Trent asks for a solicitor.

At Clare's house, Henry is cooking Lobster Thermidor. Henry says, "It wouldn't be a celebration without... a bottle of..." He opens a bottle of champagne. Henry tells Clare that he is going to Italy for training camp. Without her. Clare is furious.

Plot Denouement[]

At the hospital, Scott and Barnaby are playing cards. They hear a Motorbike approaches. They turn off the lights. Someone dressed in black comes in and smashes the bed with a tire iron. Scott catches the culprit. It is Clare. At the police station, Barnaby says, "I'm looking at "an irate spouse or jealous partner. You were a...conquest of his, weren't you? And then he ditched you for a... ..precocious, grabbing, silly little girl, Hettie Trent. And then he meets Sandra Tate, and he falls for her, hook, line and sinker. Unlike any of the other women he knew, including you, SHE could tell him what to do. She told him to call off the robbery, and he did. The robbery was your idea. I think you're a very high maintenance lady. I think you've been very expensive to keep. But once in Malta, Freddie wouldn't have to do that any more, would he? It's in the company's name. You can't get any capital out of that. So you went to Guy Sweetman with a plan. A plan to rob Ivan Hawkins, collect the insurance money, sell the stolen goods. But Guy pulled out, at Sandra's insistence."

Clare says, "He let me down, Inspector. In more ways than one. That night I went to his house. He wasn't there. So I waited. (Flashback: Clare says, "Guy. Guy, I really need to talk to you." Guy says, "No point, Clare. I won't budge." Clare says, "What's happened to make you lose your nerve?" Guy says, "I haven't lost my nerve. I've had a change of heart." Clare says, "I really need that money, Guy." Guy says, "You'll manage somehow. I must have been mad to even contemplate it." Clare says, "Who's been getting to you? Some new girlfriend with a righteous streak. Has she got money?" Guy says, "No. But her parents do. More than that, Clare, she puts you in the shade. I mean, fancy falling for a beautiful, YOUNG thing like that, when I could have you for the asking?" He turns around and walks away. Clare grabs a stone and hits him over the head twice. Then she dragged him down to the river and held his head under water.) Barnaby says, "Heat of the moment stuff, was it?" Clare says, "Yes. Yes, you could say that." Scott says, "Why did you try to kill Sandra Tate?" Clare says, "Two reasons. She knew all about the robbery and would tell you all about it, as I'm sure she has done. And she spoiled my life, Inspector."

Barnaby, Joyce and Cully go to look at a boat. Joyce reads the brochure: "Made in the 1960s, mahogany skin, brass fittings, in need of some refurbishment, being sold for personal reasons." Cully says, "Which means they'll take an offer." Barnaby says, "Huh! Might not take mine." Joyce says, "Mr Tapley said No.17." Barnaby says, "THAT is Philip Trent's boat. Can I tell you about the personal reasons?" They go to look at the inside of the boat. Joyce says, "A bit of a clean, a bit of varnish here and there, new curtains, and new upholstery. I can see us now, way up river, And then we'll park - MOOR - the boat at one of the Midsomer villages and we'll go round the antique fairs, maybe a farmers' market and..." Joyce sees a rat. "Oh, my God." Joyce leaves. Cully says, "Mum, what?" She sees the rat and leaves. Barnaby says, "Thank you," to the rat.
