British Actor John Hopkins (born 1975) played Detective Sergeant Daniel Scott for fourteen episodes on the popular British TV crime drama series Midsomer Murders. He is a 1996 graduate of the University of Leeds and then became a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Hopkins left Midsomer Murders after completing series 8. His character disappeared without any explanation other than a brief suggestion he had called in sick. He was not mentioned again, leaving fans curious when there was no official announcement of his departure. The actor explains during a recent BBC Podcast interview.

After he left the show, he returned to the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2006-2007 season in both London and Stratford-upon-Avon. Remaining largely on the stage, he did appear as Sir Francis Basset for two series of the BBC reboot of the period drama 'Poldark.' In a 2020 article in The Times (London), named him one of '10 of the best British actors on stage now.'
