Johnny Carver is an unseen but voiced character in the episode The Ballad of Midsomer County of the ITV drama Midsomer Murders.

Despite his death occurring 25 years prior to the events of The Ballad of Midsomer County, Johnny is the true pivotal character of the episode as his past actions and death fuel the core plot.

Life and Death

Johnny was the brother of Danny Carver, the pair were close until 1990[1] due to Johnny having an affair with Danny's wife of two years Heather. Though after Johnny's apparent suicide Danny became protective of his brother's legacy and raised the daughter Heather had with Johnny- Melody Carver- as his own[2].

Johnny was a successful folk singer and according to Tom Asher he 'really could sing'[3] and Frank Wainwright deemed him as special[4].

As his fame grew Johnny became a drug user but his true vice was women as Danny recalled that his brother had 'no self-control' when it came to the opposite sex and 'half the girls' of Lower Crosby were sneaking up to see him at his house outside the village on the Crosby Road[5].

Johnny's death and apparent 'lost album' made him a legend of the folk scene, Toby Winning and Jay Templeton were two such devotees[6].

The Lost Album of Johnny Carver: His Last Words.

Quarter of a century later in 2015, Melody eager to launch her own music career agreed to find the lost album for Toby Winning in return for funding some recording sessions[7]. However Winning made the horrifying discovery that Johnny had recorded his own murder all those years ago[8].

Winning implored Johnny's killer to come clean but became the person's second victim. After Winning met his end Winning's conniving business partner Brian Grey attempted to blackmail the murderer but was unsurprisingly killed as a result[9].

The final victim was Frank Wainwright[10], however he wasn't killed directly because of his link to Johnny. The killer was revealed to be Tom Asher, in a showdown between him, John Barnaby and Tom's wife Claire, who was one of Johnny's conquests[11].

Tom revealed he'd shot Johnny to 'preserve' Claire's honour but in truth it was out of jealousy. Winning and Grey's murders were committed to cover up the fact while Frank was killed because he was going to buy Claire's hotel[12].
