An acquaintance of DCI Barnaby who once arrested him on a charge of robbery with violence. He did eighteen months in prison, and when he emerged, moved to Newton Magna and bought the manor there, then began to make himself lord of the manor, making improvements to the village, while running a horse farm and riding school.
He made assumptions based on who he liked, disliked, and what worked best for his plans, and planted evidence in one man's cottage.
By the end of the episode, he asked Barnaby if he was going to arrest him. Barnaby said he was, on a charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice.
