Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Geoffrey Barnaby (better known as Tom Barnaby) is the main character and chief protagonist of the TV programme Midsomer Murders. He is portrayed by John Nettles.

Personal Details

In 1973 while investigating the case of the Pimlico Poisoner. Tom and Joyce were married in London registry officer according to information provided in Death's Shadow, when Joyce mentioned to Cully that their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. Tom and Joyce's only child, Cully was born in 1978, the year was calculated from information provided in the episode named Bad Tidings. In addition to his wife and daughter viewer have been introduced to Alice Bly, his maternal aunt, his mother-in-law, Muriel, his father-in-law Douglas, Simon Dixon, his son-in-law and his cousin DCI John Barnaby of Brighton CID

Career Details

Thomas Geoffrey Barnaby life in public service began after his graduation from Police College when he was recruited by MI-6, as stated in the episode entitled Secrets and Spies. The length of his service with MI-6 is unknown, however by the mid-sixties Branaby had left MI-6 and joined the police force. DCI Barnaby and his best friend Jack Colby joined the police force on the same day eventually both rose to the rank of Sergeant with Colby remaining a uniformed sergeant, and Barnaby transferring to CID as stated in Death in a Chocolate Box. Newly arrived in CID Detective Sergeant Barnaby was placed under the supervision of Detective Inspector Owen Jenkins. DI Jenkins and DS Barnaby investigated the disappearance of Ginger Foxton one of the members of jazz band called Hired Gun which was finally solved some thirty years later during events chronicled in the episode entitled The Axeman Cometh. Sometime between 1991 and 1997 Tom Barnaby now a DCI was transferred to Causton CID In Midosmer as mentioned in the episode entitled Strangler's Wood.

As DCI one of Barnaby's duties is to train and guide the developments of the Detective Sergeants who assist him, and act as his partner. Since, series premiere in 1997 DCI Barnaby has had three partners. The first of his partners was Detective Sergeant Gavin Troy who served alongside Barnaby, until he was promoted to Detective Inspector and was transferred to new post at the conclusion of the episode entitled The Green Man. In the next episode called Bad Tidingsthe viewers were introduced to Troy's replacement, in the person of Detective Sergeant Daniel Scott who came to Causton CID after being reassigned from the Metropolitan Police to the Midsomer Constabulary. The reasons for Dan Scott's reassignment to Midsomer and his abrupt departure from the series during the interim between Midsomer Rhapsody and The House in the Woods have never been explained within the continuity of the series. Scott's absence as noted in episode entitled The House in the Woods required DCI Barnaby to make a brevet appointment, he appointed PC Ben Jones an Acting Detective Constable, the appointment became permanent when Jones transferred into CID. Subsequently, during the episode called Last Years Model Jones earned his promotion to Detective Sergeant.
